On November 3, 2008, in Cell Phones, Latest News, by Admin Staff

Nokia’s latest N series two way slider handset N85 has now arrived the UK. Along with the very prestigous N96, this has probably been the next in line most looked forward to latest handset from Nokia. If you remember, we featured a N85 hands on video back in September, for those who have since been captured by its charming appearance (OLED display!) and excellent functionality, you might like to know the Nokia N85 is now available (as of 31/10/2008) via Dial-a-Phone.

Though we received messages earlier on that Phones4u would be the main distributor for it here in the UK, we have as yet not seen any updates, but we’ll keep you updated on this matter.

Currently, Dial-a-phone has the Nokia N85 on offer for free from Orange on an 18-month contract for £35 a month. Included with this is also a special offer of three months half price, a free magic number and each month you will receive unlimited texts in addition to 600 tariff included minutes.

Ah WInZip, I reckon its been years since I last even touched WinZip, with so many other compression and extraction related softwares that are free out on the net there is no denying that WinZip has lost its once glorious trademark in file compression technology.

However, with the launch of WinZip version 12, could we expect a comeback from the old king of compression? That’s take a brief look at its new features… Version 12 of this venerable archiving tool packs a couple of excellent new compression features and enhancements. The best new feature lets users compress JPEG images, this is something that’s been known for its difficulty because of their already-compressed nature. Another new feature, Zip from Camera, lets you transfer and compress photos directly from your camera. As long as the model is supported, the improved thumbnail view will not only let users view thumbnails of their archived images but it will also let you browse images within ZIPs without having to extract files first.

Encryption features get more than a new coat of paint in this version, with customisable password requirements and enhancements for system administrators that let them determine how, if at all, encryption is enforced.

Just in case you were wondering, AES is supported, with the option for both 128-bit and 256-bit security. Files and folders can also be renamed within a ZIP, and the new Smart View is content-sensitive, automatically choosing the Thumbnail view for images, for example. The flexible drag-and-drop support is great, allowing you to drag files to and from the interface, which will zip or unzip them automatically.

The new contextual menus will enable you to perform most of WinZip’s functions on the fly. Overall, WinZip’s latest update with a whole package of new ideas and functionality makes it still the best compression programs available. By being able to provide all the features necessary to create easy backups, compress and e-mail files and manage downloaded files effectively, this once ever so popular PC tool will probably take advantage of its new features and remain as one of the top 10 compression tools certainly for sometime to come!

Update (14/09/2008): The subsequent version of the iPhone firmware, version 2.1 can now be jailbroken, unlocked! More details – Roundup of jailbreaking, unlocking the iPhone 2.1 2G and 3G…
It’s been sometime since our last round up for jailbreaking the latest iPhone firmware, this latest round up will summarise for you the latest you need to know for jailbreaking the latest iPhone firmware, firmware version 2.0.2.

Since Apple’s update was released in an attempt to fix some of the issues relating to 3G on the iPhone well over a week ago, there have since been version updates released for various jailbreaking tools such as the Pwnage Tool, WinPwn and QuickPwn… So let’s get cracking!

  • Pwnage Tool 2.0.3.1

So let’s first talk about the latest Pwnage Tool from the iPhone Dev Team, it’s latest is now version 2.0.3.1, this latest release includes an updated Installer app. Though it’s the newest from the iPhone Dev Team, it will only jailbreak and NOT unlock the iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.0, 2.0.1 or the latest 2.0.2. If the first gen iPhone (2G) is the one you have, this latest Pwnage Tool will jailbreak and unlock your iPhone running either firmware 1.1.4 or 1.1.5 or 2.x including iPhone firmware 2.0.1 and 2.0.2.

The latest Pwnage Tool will also include multi language support, these include, German, French, Hungarian and Russian. Please be aware that Pwnage Tool is only compatible for Mac users and not Windows users (use the tools below if you’re running Windows).

  • QuickPwn Tool 2.0.2

The Previous version of the QuickPwn Tool did not support Mac users and was originally made for just Windows users. The latest version 2.0.2 supports both OS now, and can be used to jailbreak the latest firmware 2.0.2 by anyone. Don’t be confused, QuickPwn Tool is not a replacement for the Pwnage Tool. Think of QuickPwn as the little brother of Pwnage Tool, err… In other words, the Pwnage Tool is still much more powerful.

As we mentioned in previous posts, QuickPwn makes it quicker and easier to jailbreak iPhone as it does not need iTunes based full restore. Pwnage Tool on the other hand is more powerful, because it allows you to create custom iPhone firmware versions which can then be used to pwn the iPhone to jailbreak it.

The Mac version of QuickPwn Tool will work on iPhone running firmware 2.0.2 and it’s interface is similar to the Pwnage Tool. The latest Windows version of the QuickPwn Tool has now been updated to work on iPhone running iPhone firmwares 2.x (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2).

Just like the Pwnage Tool, QuickPwn Tool will only jailbreak and NOT unlock the iPhone 3G. If the first gen iPhone (2G) is the one you have, it will jailbreak and unlock your iPhone.

  • WinPwn Tool 2.5

The WinPwn Tool to me has never attracted as much attention in comparison to the creations of the iPhone Dev Team, especially now that QuickPwn is available. Nevertheless for Windows users, the latest WinPwn Tool, version 2.5 is available to jailbreak your iPhone running 2.x (2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2).

WinPwn 2.5 can be used to jailbreak, unlock and activate first gen iPhones running firmware 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. It can also be used to jailbreak iPhone 3G running firmware 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 but cannot unlock iPhone 3G.

The latest version of the tool comes with an all new user interface and includes the following features:

  • QuickPwn Support for iPhone firmware 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2
  • Root partition resize support
  • Installer support
  • Basic / Expert modes
  • Wizard style interface
  • Automatic updater
  • Support for WinXP and Vista 32/64bit

You can use WinPwn in either Basic or Expert mode. The basic mode is like the easy mode where it uses default settings. All you need to do is build a custom firmware image and restore your iPhone using that custom firmware via iTunes. The expert mode as the name suggests gives you more control over the process.

You can download WinPwn 2.5 here. You must uninstall any older version of WinPwn before you install the latest version.

Should you choose to use WinPwn, here are some links in case you require further support:

This is just to let everyone know the iPhone Dev Team have released a new jailbreaking tool called the QuickPwn and is intended for Windows users with iPhones or iPod Touches running the firmware 2.0.1. QuickPwn is currently still in beta but is safe and is already available for download. It’s also got an advantage over WinPwn in that it operates very quickly without needing iTunes to rebuild/restore your device afterwards.

I’m not a big fan of Palms but there’s just been some rumor going on possibly about a new Treo, called the Treo Pro. So I decided to look it up and surprisingly this new rumored Treo Pro actually looks quite stunning. Of course, you would expect a BlackBerry-like design, but if this is not a photoshop creation then might I say Palm fans should be in for a treat, it’s about time Palm!

The news that the South Korean mobile giant Samsung was going to join the eight megapixel camera phone trend with their new phone i8510 was announced in late July, however nothing was said about whether it will be launched in the UK until now. It was announced yesterday that Samsung’s latest eight megapixel bad boy will be the first of its kind to arrive the UK and we now know that we’re looking at around next month in September, no exact dates have been told.

Samsung I8510 Cell Phone 8 Mp Front

The Samsung i8510 is a multimedia slider phone, equipped with a 2.8″ 16 million colour LCD display, connectivity wise it features 3G and HSDPA as well as WiFi. When it was first announced late last month, it was said that 8GB and 16GB versions would be available, it would be interesting to see if this would apply to its arrival here in the UK.

Now of course, the most exciting bit, the i8510′s eight megapixel camera can take photos of up to 3264×2448 pixels, it’s got autofocus, image stabiliser, video(VGA@30fps, QVGA@120fps), unfortunately no fancy Xenon flash here. This amazing camera is also supported by a unique application that automatically geotags photographs with the location where they were taken, abit like the Google Map function you get with Picassa web albums. Also included within its functionality are features such as auto-panorama shot, face, smile and blink detection.

Samsung I8510 Cell Phone 8 Mp

The Samsung i8510 has been said to be able to offer stand-by time of up to 310 hours and up to eight hours of talk time. The most unfortunate thing about the i8510 is that it doesn’t have a touch screen and unlike the iPhone it’s got alot more entertainment features like DivX/H.263/H.264/WMV/MP4 player, video editing, MP3/eAAC+/WMA/AMR/RealAudio player and TV out functionality. The Samsung i8510 will certainly be a popular choice amongst mobile phones due to be released in the next few coming months. We’ll keep everyone updated with news on tariff and handset pricing, for the time being we only know that it will be launched through the Carphone Warehouse.
