One problem that many iPhone users have noticed after the recent 1.1.3 firmware / software upgrade is poor signal, low and/or continuously fluctuating signal strength no matter where you might be positioning your iPhone – resulting in poor reception and calls being unexpectedly dropped. It seems that this does not apply to a large majority of 1.1.3 firmware / software iPhone users, but certainly a significant number enough to raise awareness of its problem, the problem itself is also not limited to 1.1.3 firmware users on non-jailbroken iPhones but also those with iPhones that have been jailbroken via whatever method available.
Hopefully the following tips may be worth trying in order to help restore your iPhone’s proper signal, at least near where it should be. We certainly don’t understand why it is behaving the way it is, but the signs of the problem are mainly:
- Signal dropping suddenly to zero or very low without any warning
- Or the display of the message ‘Call failed’
- And most annoying and frustrating of all: the signal coming back straight after a phone call which was experiencing poor signal reception (we experienced this quite a few times!)
So after trying out some of the methods suggested by both iPhoneHacks and iPhoneAtlas we felt the below methods are worth trying.

George Hotz has done it and released what we think is the first software based method for unlocking / jailbreaking iPhones running the latest firmware 1.1.3 for use on unauthorized wireless carriers. Though this sounds like something very clever and convenient as it unlocks iPhones directly from firmware 1.1.3 instead of having the need to downgrade like previous iPhone / iPod Touch jailbreaking methods we have introduced…
Due to some of the problems users have been experiencing in the last few days regarding the latest Official 1.1.3 Upgrader, the iPhone dev team has further released an improved version of the Official 1.1.3 Upgrader.
If you’ve been having the problems below, this quick update will definitely help fix some of your problems:
- ?Main Script Error? when attempting to install apps through Installer.app Make sure that Installer.app is updated to the latest version before applying the jailbreak.
- Ringtones broken Download ?Ringtone Fix? from Installer.app.
- Inability to use the Google ?Locate Me? function Try installing Navizon through Installer.app, running it once, then attempting the Google ?Locate Me? function again. Or install ?Locate Me? from Installer.app
- Broken EDGE connectivity Tap Settings, Tap General, Tap Reset, Tap Reset Network Settings. This will cause your iPhone to restart, and will delete any stored Wi-Fi passwords as well as DNS settings and more. It may, however, restore your ability to pair with and use Bluetooth devices. If this fails, try resetting all settings.
- OpenSSH broken Uninstall then reinstall this application and the BSD Subsystem via Installer.app.
- Some third-party applications not working Some applications have not yet been updated to work with firmware/software 1.1.3. These include ?Customize? and ?SummerBoard.?
If you’re looking at this post, you are probably still pondering about whether or not to upgrade to the recent iPhone / iPod Touch 1.1.3 update and go for the 1.1.3 jailbreak which was released last week. Like many, the chances are that you must be worried about problems such as bricking or locking up your device. Hopefully in this post, by explaining and introducing the “Official 1.1.3 Upgrader” we will be able to help you make up your mind
So here is how it works, if you already have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch running the last firmware: 1.1.2, the iPhone dev team has now released a quick and easy way for you to upgrade straight from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3. The Official 1.1.3 Upgrader is an automatic, graphical method for upgrading to a jailbroken 1.1.3 device without any host computer interaction.
You might have read about something similar to this called ?iJailbreak?, it’s another similar jailbreak method not requiring any host computer at all but rather a solution not recommended by the iPhone dev team – so definitely don’t opt for the iJailbreak! What iJailbreak does is that it uses the same process as Nate True’s hack, meaning it breaks Nikita. (Nikita is the crucial component on the iPhone / iPod Touch responsible for installing signed official software, such as the iPod App Pack and SDK applications in the near future. And it is this component which ?Nate True?s jailbreak has disrupted.)
Anyway, the new method that we’re explain: Official 1.1.3 Upgrader, preserves Nikita and is also less prone to error. So here is how to use it…
