When tablets, slates and ultrabooks first launched a few years ago, the lack of a DVD drive were a problem for some. Those who are users of the MacBook Air may have bought a Superdrive for the same reason, we’re just not quite in the era when we can do without an optical drive just yet. This week, Samsung launched the latest, ultrathin and very elegantly designed Samsung SE-218BB, at just 14mm thick, its also 8% lighter than your average external DVD drive.

Change is good but pushing in words right before Halloween and releasing the ‘improved’ version for free during the Halloween season might look like a marketing gimmick to many but as far as the newly released WinX DVD Ripper Platinum v6.0 is concerned – the new version is another step closer to perfection though they still have a lot to cover. The name says it all! WinX DVD Ripper Platinum Edition is the Microsoft Windows based DVD ripping software that can handle all your ripping requirements. If you want to transfer some of your favorite movies from your laptop to your mobile then WinX DVD ripper will convert (as we say it in geeky terms ‘rip’) that movie to the format (and size) that will be bearable for your small little mobile. To add value to the software the makers have included the 1:1 DVD copy option using which you can backup your DVDs before your kids end up scratching them to their best. Even your subtitles, audio, and true video quality will be backed up as is without any noise interfering.

You might have used DVD ripping softwares that lets you complete the ripping process with the help of few simple clicks (and few hours of ripping ofcourse). I am pretty sure that the simplicity of such ripping softwares is enough to mesmerize its users and thus take lead in terms of competition but what users don’t understand is that they can play with plenty of settings of the dvd ripping software (if permitted) henceforth converting the outcome of dvd ripping process as a masterpiece.

If you’re like me and have got lots of old CDs and DVDs lying around at home, this new DIY iPhone dock created by our friends at Geeky Gadgets could help you make use of those long forgotten discs. I usually donate my old discs to charity shops, however I have lots with missing cases, so I might actually try this myself too.

The Recycled CD iPhone Dock will work for iPods and iPhones, you will require about 11 CDs or DVDs, some super glue and also a Dremel for cutting through the discs itself.
