The Munkey is truly one of those one of a kind gadgets which when you see it you’d say ‘why didn’t I think of that?’, this is exactly what I said to myself when this was sent to us. In this quick review we’ll tell you what we thought of the new mobile phone stand, as always lots of pics and of course is it worth your money?
The Munkey which is proudly made in the US was designed mainly for those who enjoy watching movies and videos on their mobile device and especially for those of you who do this while on the go. Supported mobiles include the iPhone, iPod Touch, Droid, HTC Hero, BlackBerry Storm and Zune HD. If you have a device that is similar in size to these, then its most likely that it will fit the Munkey.
Design
The Munkey does look fab, quite elegant and eye-catching too. We like the fact that the Munkey is extremely lightweight, even though it may not seem like it. It is in fact made of aluminum and therefore less likely to crack if your brother sits on it, as for the packaging, well there weren’t really much else to comment about.
As pictured, it does come with a protective case as well as a strap for when you watch movies while sitting at the back of a car.
Because the stand itself is made of metal, what we did feel was an issue were the edges of the stand, not that it would cut anyone but the edges felt rough, therefore we would be hesitant on giving it full marks on finishing.
Features
While you may not expect much from an ordinary mobile phone stand, you must remember this is the Munkey – designed for your mobile at home and on the go. Did it achieve its purpose? Here are the instructions from the Munkey’s website on how to use the stand…
- Loop the loose end of the strap through the top slot on the back of The Munkey.
- Feed the strap through the bottom slot.
- Attach the male end of the buckle to the strap.
- Unclip buckles.
- Attach to an airplane tray table or front seat car head rest, tighten and RELAX!
I must admit its great for when you’re at home and just need a stand, in this case, we used the first gen iPhone to test the Munkey as its one of the thickest of the iPhones.
As you can see, even for the first gen iPhone with a case, the Munkey handles the phone perfectly fine and still has a tiny bit more room to offer, this is where a potential issue is concerning. If I used the iPhone 3GS or any phone that is even more slimmer, there would be instability issues. While I might be expecting too much from a phone stand, but because the Munkey has been designed to be nearly a universal fit for majority of latest smartphones, it runs the risk of being a poor stand due to lack of specificity to the design of any phone what so ever.
If you wobble the stand, for example in the car, your iPhone would definitely fall straight off, there is simply nothing to hold on to it at the top. There are also no plastic cushions on the inner aspects of the ‘hands’ / ‘handles’ of the Munkey which means the stands metallic edges could potentially scratch your screen if you don’t have a screen protector.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, we felt the Munkey was definitely a very ambitious design, its unlike any stand that is currently available. There are some areas where an extra finishing touch can be added. We have briefly addressed some of the issues we noticed while testing it out, one of the greatest benefits of have a multi-device fittable stand will probably be if you have more than one mobile phone that you carry with you most of the time. We feel $30 / £20 for the Munkey does make it rather pricey and high end, however, if you’re certain you won’t experience the issues we pointed out then you should definitely give the Munkey a go and choose your favourite colour!
