Many are frequently worried of the costs of applications, this can no doubt be a problem but this is in fact nothing to be concerned about. There are thousands of fully functional / non-trial applications available on the Android Market that are completely free, the best one so far which isn’t available to the iPhone is Google Maps’ turn by turn navigation.

Internet browsing is slightly different compared to the iPhone, partly because it isn’t Safari, secondly because the X10 doesn’t support multitouch and thirdly there is no pinch and zoom. However, the Xperia X10′s large screen makes up for this, it doesn’t take very long to get use to at all, its obvious limitation is that it too does not support flash, though watch this space! If you don’t like its onboard browser, you can always choose others from the Android Market such as SkyFire.

The experience of watching YouTube on the X10 was significantly enhanced by its large screen, it was also able to load high quality videos fairly swiftly. The only annoying issue is that the X10′s loudspeakers are almost non-existent, you’d be better off plugging headphones into the 3.5mm port Sony Ericsson has provided. If you want to watch your own videos, just pop them into its MicroSD, though you need to be aware that there is no support for DivX and XviD video playback.

Conclusion

While we could have tested plenty more features and showed you many more applications demonstrating how well they worked on Sony Ericsson’s first Android flagship, we think at the end of the day, it all comes down to its software and hardware. The Xperia X10 has indeed been blessed with some of the best and latest hardware available, the thought that a phone can have a new and different feature and function each day does truly live up to its expectation of being a ‘smartphone’.

However, it is important to also bear in mind when considering the new Xperia X10 that it is able to achieve so much more compared to other Sony Ericsson phones because it runs on Google’s Android OS. What you are therefore buying is the first collaboration between Sony Ericsson’s design, customised overlaying software / UI and camera and an ever so popular operating system. A number of issues have been pointed out with regards to SE’s features, yet overall, the Xperia X10 is not bad for any user looking to convert to a smartphone or from the iPhone. If you’ve never touched an Android phone before, in many ways, choosing an Android phone like the Xperia X10 makes great sense, ie no more iTunes, more phones to choose from, better camera, open source, no jailbreaking, easier to unlock, etc… Pricing here in the UK for a sim-free, unlocked Xperia X10 ranges from £380 – £460. While this may seem expensive, this is in fact the price you are looking at when considering Android phones, as they do tend to be on the high end. Its price range is certainly not the most expensive we’ve seen for Androids as well. Similar Android phones within this price range that we’d definitely recommend looking into include the HTC Desire, Motorola Milestone and HTC Legend.

Pros

  • Beautiful elegant design
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • 1 GHz SnapDragon processor allows it to compete with many popular Android phones in terms of speed
  • Large four-inch TFT capacitative touchscreen
  • Excellent camera, probably one of the best out of Android phones
  • Has all the connectivity features you’ll need

I found this in addition to 0.5-inch screen rather funny. It was not hard in the pockets of your jeans does not make the phone awkward to maintain. It should be noted that, although it may seem high, it feels much thinner than it is actually a dimension of 13 mm and thickness.
