Far Cry 2’s designer destruction
Admit it: you secretly call yourself Daddy Death match and reckon you have already got the mad level, editing skillz to design your own multiplayer levels. Well, Far Cry 2’s map editor gives you the chance to back up the big words by enabling you to build your own killings fields, and then post them online for people to enjoy. Think Little Big Planet, only with the AK 47’s Jeeps and vast, burning forests.
Unlike previous console map editors that see you slotting pre formed titles into ready made environments, Far Cry 2 offers enormous scope. Using the cursor you can pull mountains out of the ground just by hitting (x), carve rivers into the soil or add swathes of vegetation to build lush jungle setting. It’s all completely free form enabling you to guide the cursor around like God’s own paint brush as you layer incredible and detail into your creation.
You can also cherry pick from thousands of the ‘off the shell’ objects to add tress, cars, building, barrels, bridges and so on. There are fancy environments effects too, like the sun blooming through the leaves, or stormy winds. Plus you can shoot branches off the trees and start fires that propagate through the bush, just like in the single player mode. In fact, the visual quality we have seen so far looks indistinguishable from the main game, featuring everything from African shanty village to construction sites. Ubisoft has even recreated a huge chunk of Paris to demonstrate just how versatile the toolset. We are already working on our first level. It’s called “Enemy team spawns screaming in forest fire’.
