So you adore your first gen iPhone or iPod Touch, but have mates who have the iPhone 3G or 3GS. You’re generally happy with your iPhone except the fact that every now and then your friends fool around with apps (especially turn by turn navigation ones) that won’t have any chance of working on yours.

We’ve talked about a similar solution to this before, xGPS which is a GPS app that gives the iPhones and iPod Touch free turn by turn navigation, however that application does require your device to be jailbroken which is a pain for users who aren’t so tech-savvy.

So here is yet another solution to give your iPhone or iPod Touch the power of GPS. Though I must first warn those who are interested, this method is rather pricey. G-Fi is a new device which you can buy for your GPS-less iPhone or iPod Touch. Its like a box which you buy at a one-off cost of $99, it creates a mobile wireless point similar to the function of a router, it then spins out GPS locations to any number of devices in the area, up to 200 in total to be precise. In other words, one G-Fi will support simultanesouly 200 iPhones’ GPS needs. G-Fi also states that its GPS precision is of such high quality that even the iPhone 3G and 3GS will benefit from it.

Like we said, this solution is pricey. Because in addition to buying the G-Fi, in order for your iPhone or iPod Touch to be equipped with turn by turn navigation, you need to purchase the turn by turn application Navmii from the App Store which is at the moment the only app supporting G-Fi. Priced at £19.99 / $32.99, Navmii is a relatively new app compared to the likes of TomTom and Co-Pilot. It features such as route guidance, destination search, speed camera alert, POIs, free map updates for the first 12 months. Check out some of the screenshots below…

Unfortunately because of the total cost of this “package solution”, those of you who own the first gen iPhone / iPod Touch may want to still consider the alternatives of using xGPS or even buying the Magellan GPS car kit ($129, but offers you the freedom of choosing any GPS / turn by turn navigations / location-based apps on the App Store).
