Google Voice returning to iPhone as VoiceCentral web app
As an iPhone user, you may be aware of the difficulty Google Voice has had with Apple. While the official Google Voice application has been rejected from the App Store, it doesn’t mean its not going to be possible. Though unofficial this time, Riverturn has created a web based app known as VoiceCentral Black Swan Edition, which means it won’t be coming to the App Store but the advantage of this is it’ll be available to everyone.
VoiceCentral Black Swan Edition is only available in beta at this point but when it does get public, users will be able to make calls, send texts, and read and listen to voicemail messages, all from one convenient location. Unfortunately, being a web based app, it means VoiceCentral has to use the speaker (or earphones) for sound and you won’t be able to use the iPhone’s earpiece. Users also won’t be able to access your contact list directly from the iPhone, so you’ll have to import your contacts into your Google Voice account. But maybe a jailbroken app could sort that out!
There is no info on when the app will become public but for now it looks like it will work for all iPhone and iPod Touch users running firmware 3.0 or above. We’ll keep you posted with any news on the VoiceCentral web app.
