Five great Palm Pre apps for sports fans

Most sports fans like to keep up with their favorite sports and favorite teams in real time. And, there’s no better way to do this than by using mobile applications. The PalmPre is working to provide apps to their users similar to what Apple provides for the Iphone. Of course, the iPhone has been around longer and so not only has Apple had more time to get apps out there, but the third party developers have had more time, too.

So, the list for sports apps for Palm Pre is certainly not as long as the list for iPhone, but given time, I’m sure that Palm apps will catch up. Meanwhile, there are a few good applications for the Palm that sports enthusiasts will love. With these apps, you’ll be able to keep up on all your favorite sports news, schedules and scores. Here are five you need to check out now. Some of the apps must be purchased from Palm, but many of them are free.

    1. Race Schedule – This free application helps you keep track everything going on in NASCAR. You’ll get the schedules, the pole positions and, of course, the race winners. There’s an entire database here filled with information about racing teams and drivers.
    2. PDA Baseball Stats – With this free app, you’ll have a complete database of all the important baseball statistics.
    3. NFL Mobile – This app from Palm allows you to track football games, teams and players.
    4. Directv-NFL – This app is for Directv subscribers. Register on your Directv page and you can get mobile updates to your Palm. You can stream audio and video live from NFL games. It offers live score updates and even video. Be aware, however, the video uses a ton of battery capacity.
    5. Sporting News – This Palm App gives you all the data you need about all major pro sports. It’s a bit awkward aesthetically, but it contains a ton of information. You can also create your own fantasy team on this application.

Palm Pre owners can rest assured that more apps are to come. And, based on the popularity of sports apps on the Iphone, it’s certain that many of the new Palm apps will be sports related. There are also quite a few sports apps that are team specific. Because they are team specific and won’t appeal to a wide variety of readers, I’ve not included them here. Check the websites of your favorite teams to see if they have applications that are team specific. Those apps are especially fun because you can focus only on the teams you follow and can often meet other fans through the apps.

As always with mobile apps, there’s a new one every day. This is particularly true with the free apps from third party developers. So, keep your eyes open, especially if there’s an app you’d really like to find. There will be tons of new apps for sports fans in the very near future.
