As we have reported just a few days ago, if you’re an iPhone 3G / 3GS user who’s unlocked your iPhone using ultrasn0w, you’re advised not to update to the latest iPhone OS 3.1.1 (3.1) which was released earlier this week. The iPhone Dev Team has confirmed that should you do so it could possibility result in a permanent update to your iPhone’s modern firmware – from 04.26.08 in iPhone OS 3.0 to 05.11.07, making it difficult to unlock using the Dev Team’s unlocking tools in the future.
Despite previously mentioning just iPhone 3G and 3GS, we’d now like to also warn first gen iPhone users as well – don’t update to OS 3.1 even if you are only thinking about jailbreaking and not unlocking because updating will result in your iPhone losing its jailbreak. For those who are worried about when the iPhone hacking community may come up with a solution, we can also confirm that the Dev Team is working on an update for their Pwnage Tool which will work for iPhone OS 3.1…
“PwnageTool lets you make custom-made mix+match IPSWs, so we’ll be updating that for 3.1.”
On the other hand, for those who have asked about updating their iTunes to the latest iTunes 9, it is absolutely safe to do so no matter which iPhone you have, no matter you’ve jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone…
“it’s safe to update iTunes if already jb/unlocked. Just don’t update iPhone firmware too!”
