For those who still in firmware 2.2.1 baseband 02.30.03 & bootloader after 5.8, you are no longer doomed.
Fuzzyband (can be downloaded using Cydia) upgraded my iphone 3g into baseband 04.26.08. You need to tap Fuzzyband after installed & it will ask whether you wish to upgrade your baseband firmware.
Next step is to install Ultrasn0w, you may refer to other article on iHackintosh on how to unlock using ultrasn0w.
And voila …. it was unlocked.
