So far Apple has avoided doing anything similar to this for the iPhone. This hack done by ubiq, allowed him to use Apple’s wireless keyboard to type in iPhone apps and texts and emails, etc. Making the Apple keyboard a fully functional keyboard for the iPhone and iPod Touch, users however still need to have their devices jailbroken first. Hopefully in the future, other non Apple wireless bluetooth keyboards may also be used which means those who don’t like to buy Apple’s products and accessories won’t need to as they can resort to third party ones!
Here is a short video showing the interacting devices (Apple wireless keyboard, iPhone, communicating over Bluetooth) in operation.
Feels like getting closer to the “mainstreaming” goal – it uses hardware that comes of the shelf (unfortunately you still need to have access to a jailbroken phone), uses a packaged application, does not expose bits and pieces to the end user, just works with all the applications that use the standard on-screen keyboard – and finally: it may just help you doing something more efficiently or comfortably.

I find it somewhat strange Apple haven’t introduced this themselves (I mean an external keyboard full stop, not just wireless), surely they realise their on-screen keyboard is not great for typing and that many business users would love to be able to type documents far more efficiently on some kind of portable keyboard.
We did a jailbreak-free external keyboard using iPhone SDK 2.0:
