Sony launches Blu-ray discs with interactive BD-Live video editing functionality

Posted on February 4th, 2009 by Admin Staff in Entertainment Gadgets, Technology

sony-blu-ray-discJust earlier on this month Sony started including their interactive BD-Live video editing functionality within their Blu-ray discs. And the first movie title to be equipped with this is the Step Brothers, you know the one featuring Will Ferrell and John Reilly. Anyway, we’re not here to talk about the actors, what’s so cool about this new function within Blu-ray discs is that the Step Brothers disc includes a ‘Boats N Hoes’ music video editor, allowing you to quickly put together your very own version of the video used in the film, using clips from the movie, kind of like creating your very own clip classic. Once you’re done, you can upload the video using your BD-Live connection to share with friends and check out other people’s efforts online.

And here’s the official PR from Sony if you’re interested…

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released smash hit comedy Step Brothers on Blu-ray Disc in the UK. The film, starring Will Ferrell and John C Reilly, sees the parents of two lazy, narcissistic thirty-somethings marry and move in together, leading to hilarious consequences when the pair are forced to live in the same house as step brothers.

Apart from allowing viewers to experience true high definition in the comfort of their own home, the Blu-ray Disc release also contains interactive BD-Live functionality in the form of a unique music video editing feature. The music video, ‘Boats ‘N Hoes’, appears in the film and Blu-ray Disc owners will be able to create their very own version and then share it with other BD-Live users.

Sony, one of the founding members of the Blu-ray Disc Association and a pioneer of the Blu-ray format, believes that the continued development of BD-Live is vital to the on-going success of the format, which posted record sales at the end of last year*.

David Walstra, Director for Sony Home Video Marketing Europe, says “Step Brothers gives you a good idea of what BD-Live is all about. Of course this is just the beginning and further BD-Live functions are being developed as we speak, so there is much more to come. All Blu-ray players that Sony sells today are BD-Live capable, so even if they are not being used online at the moment, consumers can buy confident in the knowledge that these players are future proof.”

“BD-Live is a great function that has unprecedented entertainment potential. The applications you see today are already proving of interest to consumer audiences and provide added value. BD-Live offers great opportunities for both creative communities and commercial parties to further develop the value of Blu-ray Disc.”

Darren Goode, Sony Picture Home Entertainment, UK marketing director, adds “We’re incredibly excited about releasing new Blu-ray titles which boast brilliant interactive features such as BD-Live.

“The Blu-ray version of the Will Ferrell and John C Reilly comedy, Step Brothers, is genuinely innovative, as it allows fans to edit their own version of the hilarious ‘Boats ‘N Hoes’ music video that features prominently in the film.  Fans can then post their edits on BD-Live for other fans to view and rate.

“These exciting interactive extras are just the tip of the iceberg, and over the next few months SPHE will be expanding BD interactivity and BD-Live.”
