Update (15/04/2009): For those looking for a baseband downgrade solution for the iPhone 3G, ModMyi have now released a tool which could help you

Readers here who have iPhones either iPhone original or iPhone 3G will notice that this week Apple quietly released a new update for minor bugfixes, firmware version: 2.2.1. For iPhone users who aren’t bothered about jailbreaking or unlocking, this is great because the update does a few things for your iPhone in terms of improvement in stability but for those who jailbreak and unlock this meant trouble.

Let us first summarise the advantage of having the new firmware 2.2.1 on board:

iphone-firmware-221-update

The firmware update contains minor bug fixes and improvements such as improved stability of Safari and a fix for an issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll.

The release notes lists minor bug fixes and improvements in iPhone firmware 2.2.1. They are mentioned below:

  • Improved general stability of Safari
  • Fixed issue where some images saved from Mail do not display correctly in the Camera Roll

I know a few of you sent us emails about accidentally upgrading through iTunes sync, the result of which meant that your iPhone became either no longer jailbroken, no longer unlocked or even both. This is not the first time this has happened and I don’t think it will be the last. Its because its so easy to press yes to update firmware when doing a routine iPhone backup or synchronisation in iTunes – I don’t blame you guys!

So I’ve decided to look up like before, ways in which you’d be able to downgrade from firmware 2.2.1, please be aware though, this method if completed successfully will downgrade from 2.2.1 to 2.2 and not the firmware you had previously on your iPhone, as I’m aware that some don’t update their iPhone firmwares everytime a new update comes out, I thought this was worth a mention.

Now, here’s the crucial part, please read the below if you want to find out why 2.2.1 is no good (yet) especially for the unlocked iPhone 3G:

The reason you need to downgrade if you accidentally upgraded to firmware 2.2.1 through iTunes is because the new 2.2.1 update breaks what the iPhone Dev Team had used in their application yellowsn0w to modify the firmware which had helped to successfully unlock iPhone 3G. Also, the new update seems to have caused a change of baseband within the iPhone 3G from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03 (don’t know if this is permanent though), 02.28.00 was crucial in order for yellowsn0w to work, so you see, updating your unlocked iPhone 3G to 2.2.1 may prove to be costly, unfortunately this was a deliberate act from Apple’s part.

Update (03/02/2009): Folks we now know that the baseband on the iPhone 3G is definitely altered and upgraded once you update your firmware to 2.2.1 and this appears at least for now, non-reversible, therefore those who are hoping downgrade might allow their iPhone 3G to be unlocked again should realise this will not be possible.

So to summarise, downgrading is therefore good only if you have the iPhone first generation and wish to downgrade back to 2.2 for unlock and jailbreak using QuickPwn for firmware 2.2. Or if you have the iPhone 3G and wish to downgrade back to firmware 2.2 for jailbreak but you definitely won’t be able to unlock for the time being. Our suggestion, if you’ve updated your iPhone 3G anyway, yellowsn0w is unlikely to be able to work until iPhone Dev Team pulls out another trick up their sleeves because your iPhone 3G’s baseband has already been altered. Therefore, why not stay in 2.2.1 and go for the jailbreak using new QuickPwn released by iPhone Dev Team for firmware 2.2.1 and enjoy some third party apps while you wait for an updated yellowsn0w (hopefully).

Therefore, if:

  • If you have the first generation iPhone, the good news is it seems the latest 2.2.1 updates doesn’t seem to have modified anything on the first gen iPhone’s baseband, the iPhone Dev Team should soon be able to release updated versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools which will let you jailbreak and unlock your first generation iPhone.
  • If you have an iPhone 3G then the dev team should soon release updated versions of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn to jailbreak (not unlock) your iPhone 3G running firmware 2.2.1 but you will need to wait and see if the iPhone Dev Team will be able to unlock the latest modem firmware / baseband 02.30.03 just like they did for 02.28.00 in yellowsn0w.
  • Update (03/02/2009): As mentioned above, baseband can’t be altered once changed at this time but tools to jailbreak 2.2.1 are already available for download.

Instructions

So here are the instructions on how to downgrade your iPhone 3G back from 2.2.1 to firmware 2.2. You must realise the problem is even after downgrading your iPhone 3G will still be locked because if you read the above, Apple has changed your iPhone 3G’s baseband delibrately but hopefully iPhone Dev Team will be able to unlock this new baseband soon.

Before we start with the step-by-step guide, you need to first download iPhone firmware 2.2 (for 1st Gen iPhone, use this direct download link and for iPhone 3G, use this direct download link).

You can then follow these steps to downgrade from iPhone firmware 2.2.1 to firmware 2.2:

  • Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes.
  • You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode (this is required only if iTunes does not recognise your iPhone at all):
    • Connect your iPhone to your computer
    • Turn iPhone off.
    • Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
    • Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
    • A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
  • In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the “Restore”  button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button. (This is an important step as just pressing the “Restore” button will result in restoring your iPhone with the latest firmware which is firmware 2.2 currently, by holding down Option in case of Mac or Shift in case of Windows, allows you choose the firmware file that you want to downgrade to.)

iphone-downgrade-221

  • You should be able to see all the older iPhone firmware files you had downloaded so far, select iPhone firmware 2.2 file from the download link mentioned earlier (1st Gen iPhone: iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw or iPhone 3G: iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw) to restore your iPhone or browse to the folder where you have downloaded it and select it.
  • You might get the any of the following errors: 1011, 1013, 1015, you can ignore them. However, if you get errors such as: 1601, 1602, 1600 or anything else then try putting the iPhone into DFU mode and try again.
  • Your iPhone should now be restored to iPhone firmware 2.2. You can check by going to Settings -> General -> About and looking for Version, it should read 2.2 (5G77).
  • The last step is to set up your iPhone from a backup and that should look like this:

set-up-iphone-back-up

[via iPhonehacks]

Update (31/01/2009):

If you see an 10xx error by following the steps mentioned above then follow the steps mentioned below:

  1. Disconnect the iPhone3G from iTunes when it comes across the error 1013. (Actually the firmware 2.2 is already successfully installed)
  2. Launch Quickpwn 2.2-1 (download links are available in our step by step guides for Mac users or for Windows users), at this time, quickpwn will pop up a window telling you to hold down both of the power & home buttons for 15 seconds then release the home button but keep holding the power button for another 2 seconds to re-activate your iPhone3G.
  3. Then you will see a white apple as usual and the iPhone 3G is now re-activating.
  4. You can see a normal screen with those lovely icons and your service back to normal.
  5. Jailbreak it using the ready launched Quickpwn tool.

I managed to downgrade successfully, but the modem is permanent at 2.30.xx and so the phone won’t work. Tried to update to the 2.2.1 jailbreak and it seems successful, but the “about” still lists it as 2.2 and the phone will not activate.

hey, thanks, i finally downgrade it to 2.2 but the baseband is that based on firmware 2.2.1 which 02.30.03.So, I will wait untill Apple will unlocked. I unlocked it, but it did not recgnized my simcard, anyway I should just wait. I hope it will be soon…

Hi Don, I’m glad it worked out for you at least partly. Yes, the baseband issue is something that I’m afraid no one is capable of changing once its done.

Though I’m sure you have your reasons for downgrading back to 2.2, however, since your baseband has already been upgraded why not use 2.2.1? 2.2.1 does offer some good stability fixes and if you jailbreak your iPhone for 3rd party apps, new jailbreaking tools have now been released by the iPhone Dev Team: http://blog.gadgetlite.com/2009/02/01/roundup-jailbreak-unlock-options/ Just thought you might like to know :)

for thos who cant downgrade, keep on trying …follow the procedures here,u might need to open many qckpawn windows once it says ” its stop working” and appears to hang, (let ur trays be messy with all those hanging qckpawn applications, thats not ur priority),launch another quickpawn and continue the process and u will be fine.If u need to launch 5 windows of qckpawn, then fine…Anyway, any questions wil be gladly answered. Again thanks to this arcticle .

yeah, thanks for suggesting to update my firmware to 2.2.1 because it appears I cannot do do anything with my baseband 02.30.03 as of the moment. But it seems the nervous breakdown that I had for unknowingly updating my firmware to 2.2.1 is still in my nerves, lol and the desperate attempt to donwgrade it to 2.2 only to encountered lot of errors was a torture I must admit, lol, untill I found ur blog (Im glad).Let me savor it first. In any case, I will update it soon (this time with proper researching first and through this site, thanks..)

    Sam says:

That was helpful thank you, but after I downgrade the SIM card didn’t work. The firmware shows Im using 2.2 but the baseband still 02.30.03. so how can i downgrade the baseband?

    • 11.1

Sam, everyone including ourselves are just coming to learn that Apple has deliberately changed the baseband in their latest update and it seems this will be non-reversible. I’m sorry your iPhone 3G isn’t unlocked anymore, but like I suggested to Don in the reply above (February 2nd, 2009 at 6:29 pm). If the damage is already done (well not really a damage!), you might as well make the most of your iPhone and stick to 2.2.1, enjoy the stability fixes and jailbreak for third party apps.

        Sam says:

That’s true, actually this is what I did, I used quickpwn and kept the software as 2.2.1. but I have a question for you guys as an iPhone users. whats the problem with the SIM adapter, coz i noticed that no one takes it as a solution. I was thinking about it and thought that I can ask you for you opinion

  12. 12
    Starla says:

Okay – I have the same problem as others mentioned above. I updated to 2.2.1 by mistake and lost the ability to use the Iphone as a phone. It is no longer jailbroken or unlocked to work with my Tmobile SIM.

SO – as a non – technical person trying as hard as I can to use my phone again…….

What do you suggest? So far, I have downgraded back to 2.2 and it shows up as version 2.2 BUT the modem is still 02.30.03. I originally downgraded so I could use the instructions from the dev site to jailbreak and unlock again.

What do I do from this point? Now that I am in 2.2 version and 02.30.03 modem???? Is it possible to jailbreak and unlock my phone to use with Tmobile?

PLEASE HELP!!!!! I NEED MY PHONE!
Any detailed explanations are welcomed – starlastroker@yahoo.com

    Cheers!

    • 12.1

Starla, thanks for leaving your comment. We’ll be happy to help you out. From what we can gather, you probably have the iPhone 3G, I understand that you are now on 2.2 but not jailbroken and not unlocked.

As per a number of comments above, unfortunately at the time this downgrade was written, many many other users too thought the moderm baseband would come back down after downgrading. Unfortunately this was not so simple and Apple as you will have heard seems to have done this purposefully.

In preparation of the iPhone 3G for something new in the future? No one knows!

Therefore, we can definitely tell you at this point (and we will keep everyone updated) there is no way this new baseband can be unlocked using any of the methods we know of. We would not suggest you try searching for sites that claim they are able to unlock the iPhone in any firmware, because that’s just rubbish and a waste of your money.

The partially good news for you at this point is that you can at least jailbreak your iPhone 3G to use apps. You can either stay in 2.2 or upgrade back to 2.2.1 (via iTunes is fine, now that you’ve already done it once), we have the jailbreaking instructions for both firmware versions http://blog.gadgetlite.com/2009/02/01/roundup-jailbreak-unlock-options/ and http://blog.gadgetlite.com/2008/11/23/roundup-jailbreaking-unlocking-4/ . However, our suggestion to you like others above is that you use 2.2.1 instead now that your modem baseband has already been changed, because there is no point in staying at 2.2. 2.2.1 does offer stability fixes for your iPhone.

As per using your iPhone 3G as a phone, I’m very sorry but that won’t be possible (yet!), because the yellowsn0w tool won’t unlock your iPhone 3G at the baseband which you have…

However, if you really really need your phone functionality and can’t wait, I guess last resort is I’d recommend you try the unlock clip from Brando (http://mobile.brando.com.hk/prod_detail.php?prod_id=03570&cat_id=1062&dept_id=100). The unlock clip claims to do the trick, and you can click into the link above to find out how it works. However, it’s much of a gamble rather than a definite unlock and based on what we have heard, it is a 50:50 chance you’ll be able to unlock your iPhone.

Sorry, I couldn’t be of more help in terms of helping you to unlock, but hope this explains things more clearly to you. Do comment back if you need further assistance!

    Error 1013/1014/1015
This error message occurs when you downgrade or upgrade to a different baseband than the firmware your restoring to has. This message does NOT mean the restore failed – it simply means the phone firmware does not match the baseband.

    1. Disconnect the iPhone3G from iTunes when it comes across the error 1013. (Actually the firmware 2.2 is already successfully installed)
    2. Launch Quickpwn 2.2-1 at this time, quickpwn will pop up a window telling you to hold down both of the power & home buttons for 15 seconds then release the home button but keep holding the power button for another 2 seconds to re-activate your iPhone3G.

PLEASE HELP ASAP.. MY PHONE IS NOT WORKING!!

You will have to wait as you also have updated your baseband from 02.28.00 to 02.30.03 by mistake as i did. and total problem is because of that. i was able to downgrade 2.2.1 to 2.2 but not the baseband. Wait for the new update.

    • 16.2

Hi Youssef, sorry for the late reply to your comment. As with other replies we’ve made to this post, I ‘m afraid there isn’t much that can be done. Your situation is much like Starla’s (above). I understand that you do not want to use 2.2.1, however, staying in 2.2 won’t get your cellular servie back, because your baseband has already been updated and won’t be unlockable using softwares for some time to come. I’m sorry, but this has been a deliberate act from Apple in order to stop people unlocking their iPhone 3Gs!

Hi Babeesh, no we haven’t actually. It would be interesting to find out whether the seller you are referring to guarantees that it will unlock the iPhone 3G. If he/she does then there is all the reason to give it a try, you can always refund if it doesn’t work! Do let us know how you get on!

    • 31.1

Hi, yes, absolutely 100%. First gen iPhones are not prone to any problems that we know of. You will be able to unlock and jailbreak :)

Also, though we don’t know why you need to downgrade, maybe you don’t like the new features of 2.2.1. But if that’s not the case, you don’t have to go through with downgrading if you feel unsure about it. Because first gen iPhones running 2.2.1 firmware can now be safely unlocked and jailbroken: http://blog.gadgetlite.com/2009/02/01/roundup-jailbreak-unlock-options/
