Pioneer’s fine technology never fails to impress, it has just unveiled a new type of 16 layer optical disc that is capable of storing up to 400GB worth of data! Of course, it’s based on Blu-ray Disc (BD) but with an added additional material of reflective layers by Pioneer. The specs of the pick-up head (PUH) remains the same as those for blank BD discs, meaning to say the Pioneer discs can be read by BD players currently in the market. Pioneer will be releasing the read-only (ROM) 400GB discs perhaps anytime between now and 2010, while the rewritable 400GB discs will arrive abit later between 2010 and 2012. It’s said a further 1TB capacity will eventually turn up in 2013!

sweet… does the girl come with the purchase too?
Disk-size has continued to grow at an overwhelming pace over the past years, and most hard drives that come with computers are more than enough for a majority of users. Internet speeds are also this way for the most part, but ISPs appear to be keeping them artificially low, so as to promote users upgrading to more expensive packages. A 400-GB disk like this does a lot to expand the size/quality/flexibility of current applications and media.
That is one seriously large disc! I suppose they have to keep advancing, otherwise flash drives will overtake them. It is going to happen sooner or later, because everybody will have a multitude of personal flash drive options available to transfer everything from phots through to music, to movies, to books…..without having to have optical readers (almost like the usb stick and mp3′s was the death of car cd players)and mechanical drives that are finicky and easy to break.
