After having seen the HTC Dream running Android on video, those that fancy it will be happy to know that T-Mobile (not the one in the UK) has finally released details of the first Google Android mobile, called the G1.

Featuring a 3.2-inch 65k colour HVGA screen with a resolution of 480 x 320 touchscreen display, QWERTY keyboard, quad-band GSM/EDGE and dual-band UMTS support, the G1 will also be equipped with GPS, Wi-Fi and a built-in accelerometer! As for its camera, it will have a 3.1 MP camera however this will not support video recording. As for bluetooth, there’s also going to be a catch, the G1’s bluetooth will support mono headsets only there no stereo and no file transfers!

The G1 will make use of all Google online services such as Gmail (with push support), YouTube, Google Talk, Google Maps with Street View, AmazonMP3 marketplace for affordable DRM-free tracks and finally, Google’s own Android Market, which would supply the handset with third-party applications over-the-air. Probably the most outstanding, unique feature to the G1 is the embedded compass, which syncs with Maps Street View allowing live 360-degree cityscape browsing just by turning the handset around - although neat, I’m unsure how many users will be taking advantage of this function. Probably the biggest downside in my view is that, the G1 will NOT have a 3.5mm headphone jack, god, what does one have to do to get a proper headphone jack these days!?

At this stage the T-Mobile G1 lacks MS Exchange support, there’s also no desktop synchronization client, syncing is only possible to Google online services such as Gmail, Calendar and etc. So, our verdict for the time being? Pretty disappointing…

If you’re interested, you might like to know that pre-orders are due to open via the T-Mobile web. T-Mobile G1 will start shipping in US stores as of 22nd October and will be selling for $179 USD with a two year contract / tariff.

T-Mobile will be offering obligatory voice and messaging plans for the G1 priced at $25 (unlimited data, limited msg) and $35 (unlimited data and msg) on top of their regular voice plans. Also, the G1 will be SIM-locked and it won’t be available with a prepaid service! So it looks like there will soon be a new group of mobile software hackers, “Android Dev Team”?

For those that are in the UK, the good news is that the G1 will be available beginning in November, and across T-Mobile’s European markets (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands) in early 2009. Pricing not yet available for the European market, however if it will be as competitive as what the iPhone 2G was, then I will be even more disappointed!
