The £5 billion Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project which have involved a number of world class scientists began smashing protons (one of the building blocks of matter) into each other at velocities only a fraction less than the speed of light this morning. The aim was to reproduce conditions that existed during the first billionth of a second after the Big Bang at the birth of the universe, while there were fears that no one could estimate precisely what would come out of the massive tumbler, the good news is it did not bring our world to an end! You’ve probably been watching it in the news all morning, here’s a small gallery of the LHC and I have to say the scale of it is incredible, more so than you would imagine from the pictures shown on the tele…

That main picture is awesome. Amazing how something so complex and technical is also of vast beauty.
Also the end of the world wasn’t going to happen anyway – they were only sending beams around it in the first instance – the first collisions between beams isn’t for a few weeks – keep an eye out!
