Colorware lets you create your own unique iPhone 3G!!!

Colorware is at it again, this time the iPhone 3G. Colorware are the people who originally brought us the first revolution against Steve Jobs’ boring iPhone colour, these guys wanted to show us that we could too have some fun and bring on our iPhones customisable colours. As well as iPhones, Colorware have expanded their quality service and expertise towards other gadgets and smartphones like the Blackberrys, Sidekick and also game consoles like the Wii, PSP, PS3 and XBox 360. They have been known to help users create colours that are unique to their taste, to me I think the best part of it all is the design process using their online studio that they offer on their site, its quite fun!

However, all the fun does come at a hefty price. For the iPhone 3G in question for example, you’re looking at $150 USD for the back, $20 for the frame, another $20 for the button, $10 for the SIM card tray and $10 for the earbuds. If you really want your whole set of iPhone to be special, you can also customise your iPhone dock at a cost of $20. So in total the maximum you’re looking at is about $230 USD!

More after the jump…

So what’s this colour coating stuff Colorware are putting on your iPhone?

After extensive testing of coloring materials, ColorWare developed our proprietary color coating system which is a hybrid of manufacturing and automotive coating materials. This system is a highly regarded trade secret and is continually updated as new technologies become available.

The whole ‘colorware process’ / colouring process may be confusing for some, what mainly happens is you design your iPhone 3G on their site with the colours you like then submit this information, after this you will be asked to send in your iPhone. Colorware does NOT sell you an iPhone, they colour yours, so you need to mail in your iPhone to the address they provided.

To make this as simple as possible, Colorware have also published some info on the things that will happen to your iPhone…

Step 1
When your order information enters our production facility, we start with a brand new product, either pulled from stock or received from a certified dealer.*Alternate Step 1 (for Send in Mine products only) Your product is received in our shipping department, and tested to be sure it is functional. After testing, your credit card is charged, and the process continues the same as below.

Step 2
Your product is sent to the disassembly department, where the external case is removed from the product and prepared for the coloring process. Only the external case of your product continues through the coloring process. Internal components are stored in a static guarded storage area while the case is colored.
Step 3
Your selected color scheme is added to your product in a multi-step, multi-day color application process, and finished with our X2 scratch-resistant coating, which is cured with ultra violet light to achieve superior scratch resistance and clarity.
Step 4
Your product is sent to the assembly team for re-assembly and final testing to make sure your product is in complete working order.
Step 5
Your customized product is boxed and sent to the shipping department. When your product leaves our facility, we also email the FedEx tracking number to the email address we have on file.

Here are some pics of the iPhone 3G I was playing around with on their site just for examples:

It’s similar to Vajacase’s Vaja Choices. You can customize everything especially the color, and add some additional text and logo/graphic with some additional charge. :)

I’ve never given this a try, but I think it’s about time I do.
