This is a very cool robot also an indicator of how far robotics have advanced in the recent years. This robot has been so well designed that it’s clever enough to draw your portrait!

How it works? Well the researcher who produced it, Sylvain Calinon says the robot is able to recognise the face of the person standing in front of it as an image, it then snaps it into it’s artificial memory. The humanoid tries to recognise and remember the major facial characteristics from the image and plots it onto a sheet of paper using a XY axis fashion. Watch the video just after the break…

Imagine robots taking over our own talents? (nahh!)

I think I’d rather have the robot take my picture. But that’s just me.

While it’s certainly well done, this has nothing to do with being “clever”. It’s just facial recognition combined with a plotter using a robot arm – both technologies have existed separately for a long time. The only new thing is that someone bothered “packaging it up” and calling it a robot.

It’s not much more than a glorified printer with a ccd camera and an image processing module.

Like those booths that take pictures, they now have booths that draw your picture, I am assuming using the same technology as above, yet it is in colour.
